The tools every licensed operator must offer
These are conditions of a Gambling Commission licence, not favours. They sit in the account settings of every site listed on this comparison, and they take effect immediately when set.
- Deposit limits
- A ceiling per day, week or month. Reductions apply straight away; increases are held for a cooling-off period before taking effect.
- Loss and spend limits
- Caps based on net losses or total staked, useful when deposits are irregular.
- Session reminders
- A reality check that interrupts play at a chosen interval and shows how long you have been on.
- Time-outs
- A short cooling-off period, typically from 24 hours to six weeks, during which the account cannot be used.
- Self-exclusion
- A minimum of six months with that operator, during which the account is closed to play and marketing must stop.
- Marketing controls
- Withdrawal of consent for promotional email, text and push messages, honoured within a short period.
GAMSTOP, and what it does
GAMSTOP is the national online self-exclusion scheme, free to join and mandatory for every operator licensed for remote gambling in Great Britain. Register once with your details and you are blocked from all of them for six months, one year or five years, according to what you choose.
Two limits are worth understanding. It cannot be reversed early — that is the point of it — and it covers online only, so betting shops, arcades and land-based casinos require their own schemes, available through those venues or through the multi-operator self-exclusion services. Blocking software adds another layer: through the TalkBanStop partnership, GamCare provides access to Gamban blocking software free of charge alongside GAMSTOP registration and helpline support.
Signs worth taking seriously
Problem gambling rarely announces itself. It shows up first in behaviour around the gambling rather than in the amounts.
- Playing longer or for more than intended, repeatedly, despite deciding otherwise beforehand
- Returning to recover losses, which is the single most reliable warning sign there is
- Gambling with money committed elsewhere, or borrowing to continue
- Hiding the extent of play from people close to you, or being defensive when asked
- Playing to escape stress, low mood or boredom rather than for entertainment
- Losing interest in things that mattered before
One of these on its own may mean little. Several together, over weeks, is a pattern — and the organisations below deal with it every day, without judgement and without cost.

Practical habits that help
- Decide the amount before you open the site. A figure chosen calmly, in advance, and set as a deposit limit is far more robust than one chosen mid-session.
- Give the session a clock. Set a reality check at thirty minutes; time passes strangely inside a game and the reminder is genuinely useful.
- Never chase. A loss is the price of the entertainment, not a debt the game owes you. The next spin has no memory of the last one.
- Keep it separate from money that has a job. Rent, bills and food are not a bankroll under any circumstances.
- Talk to someone early. The helpline exists for people who are worried, not only for people in crisis.
